The Migrating Pasture tells the story of a Kazakh nomadic family migrating from their spring grassland camp to the high mountain pasture of summer. Though the two locations lie only a day's journey apart, the rise in altitude transforms the landscape entirely, bringing dramatic shifts in terrain, climate, and light.

The protagonist, Bota, is a five-year-old girl who is still too young to ride a horse on her own. Gentle and brave, she records her tender observations and nimble imaginings of the world in her diary.
